ESAN is based in Ipswich with an office located in the grounds of St Clements Hospital (location map below).
We have three part time advocacy workers, and an advocacy development worker, who specialises in working with minority ethnic communities. All our advocates have followed an advocacy training programme, attended various training courses and conferences and have gained a thorough knowledge of the mental health system. We don't give advice, particulary in areas of finance and benefits, but if this is what you need, we will direct you to those who provide it.
ESAN has been commissioned to provide the Independent Mental Health Advocacy Service (IMHA) for people who have been detained under the Mental Health Act. The IMHA service takes priority over our Specialist Advocacy Service for people with mental ill health in the local community. People can self refer, ask a relative/friend to refer for them or a professional can contact us with the clients consent. Usually, clients are seen within 2-3 weeks of the initial contact. However, this can sometimes take longer when our waiting list becomes fuller. We endeavour to see IMHA clients within 5 working days. We usually arrange to meet with clients at the ESAN office, however, if this is not possible we can arrange to see clients at a mutually convenient venue.
The office is open from Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4pm. There may be occasions when the office isn't manned due to client meetings or training etc, however messages can be left on the answerphone and will be returned as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can email us using the 'contact us' section on the website, or leave written messages at the main reception at St Clements Hospital.
